RATPACK DJ SETS

RATPACK are DJ Lipmaster Mark & MC Evenson Allen who joined forces back in 1985 at the birth of the warehouse/rave scene and are still standing strong 25 years later.

Formed in 1985 when Evenson was a DJ/Vocalist for Locomotion Soul Sound playing Reggae, Soul & Hip Hop and Mark was a Keyboard Player and Human Beat Box. They both worked together with Mark doing beats over Evenson's sets. The Acid
House craze in 1989 soon came about and this saw the Pack take a new direction.

First by running their own local warehouse parties and then, when a DJ didn't turn up for his set Mark got on the decks and Evenson started to hype the crowd by singing and MCing, something which was a Taboo in those days, but unknowingly, this would see the start of the UK Rave Scene's first DJ/MC team. A combination which has taken them all over the World to tear up many a Dance Floor. Basically, if you've never seen Rat Pack...YOU NEED TO GET OUT MORE!! =8-)

Also enjoying huge success with hits "Searching For My Rizla" "Captain of The Ship" "Brothers/Sisters" and "The Old Skool Masters" Trilogy.
Rat Pack are near on completion of their new Album which see's them featuring "Let Me Be Your Fantasy" legend Baby D among other such as vocalist Stephanie Smart and Nu Brand Flex & R1 and also Secret Agent. Bringing a collection of styles including House, Break-beat, Drum&Bass and Dub-step.

Rat Pack are still at large rocking crowds at events like:
Glastonbury - Moondance - Raindance- Trinity - Promise Land - Masters of Old Skool - The Warehouse Project - Fantazia - Innovation - World Dance - Rezerection - Helter Skelter - Dreamscape - Global Gathering - Rave Nation, - Gatecrasher - United Dance - Movement - Slammin Vinyl - Flashback - Ministry of Sound & Stepback and even Butlins - Pontins Weekenders

JOHN KELLY DJ SETS

Most DJ's learn their craft in the bedroom, only to emerge when they feel that they have mastered the Art of manipulating the wheels of steel. John Kelly, however, learnt on the job, in front of a crowd! He bought a club in Liverpool's Victoria Street with James Barton and a guy called Billy. They initially named the club Nights Alive, but this was quickly changed to the Underground, and the logo on the membership card was the same design used for London's Tube system! The resident DJ's were JK & James (aka John Kelly & James Barton) with John Kelly learning, at first, how to programme records and work the crowd. This, of course, is something that no amount of technical expertise gained in the bedroom can teach a DJ. It can only be done in front of a crowd. Once he had learnt the basics of programming John turned his attention to beat-mixing: and pretty soon he was mixing everything from old classics to new upfront House tracks. By 1989 John Kelly was certainly one of the best mix DJ's in Liverpool.

John Kelly first played at Quadrant Park on August Bank Holiday Monday in 1990; a night put on by Hax Promotions. Other DJ's playing that night were London's Trevor Fung and Liverpool stalwarts Mike Knowler, Andy Carroll and James Barton. The live PA was LFO. When the Quad All-Nighter kicked off in November 1990 John Kelly was one of the resident DJ's. John certainly made his mark in the All-Nighter, and when Andy Carroll left the Quad in the spring of 1991 he took over Andy's Saturday night spot in the nightclub.

Overlapping with his duties at Quadrant Park, John Kelly promoted a night with Peter Coyle (of Lotus Eaters fame) on Thursdays at Liverpool's Mardi Gras Club. The music policy was Soulful Funky House and the night was very much a precursor for what Danny Rampling would later play on his BBC Radio One show the Love Groove Dance Party. John Kelly has always been a DJ's DJ and lots of DJ's and Music Industry people would come up to Liverpool, from London and Manchester, just to hear him play. In fact, Peter and John even took the G-Club on the roads a couple of times, most notably to the Gardening Club in London.

The reputation that John earned for himself from his duties at Quadrant Park and G-Love enabled him to sign up with some of the better known DJ agencies, thus moving into the National and International club scene. He was involved in the early days of Back to Basics in Leeds, and was also a regular guest DJ at the likes of Gatecrasher, Passion, God's Kitchen, Slinky, Hotdog and Cream. In fact, John played at Cream every six weeks or so, and had a weekly residency at the Ministry of Sound in 1998. In addition to all of this club work, John Kelly was also very popular on the College / University circuit.

GRAEME PARK SETS

The story of DJ Graeme Park really mirrors the story of the evolution of dance music and club culture itself. Graeme found himself working in a Nottingham record shop called Selectadisc in the early 1980s, when the very first house records began to filter through from Chicago, Detroit and New York. When the shop’s owner also opened a nightclub, it was only natural he should turn to Graeme to select the discs. Determined to showcase this new style of music, his reputation as a house pioneer soon brought him to the attention of Mike Pickering at the Haçienda in Manchester, who asked him to cover for him whilst he went on holiday in 1988.  Simply put, there was no-one else in the country who could do the job. The Summer of Lovefollowed, and Parky quickly became one of the biggest names on the emerging dance scene. Aside from his eight-year residency at The Haç, he was one of the first British DJs to play places like Australia, South America, the USA, Asia and beyond as well as producing and remixing tracks for the dancefloor.
The Haçienda was a club without a purpose until house music filled its cathedral-sized dimensions. It undeniably defined Graeme as a DJ, but in 2012, that can only be seen as one chapter in an on-going tale: ‘Yeah it was a very big chapter,’ says Graeme.  ‘I guess the first was when I discovered I could DJ and discovered house music from the US. The Haçienda was chapter 2, then chapter 3 was when it re-opened after closing for a couple of months in 1992. Chapter 4 was when it closed not long after I left and I played all around the world. I suppose Chapter 5 is where we are now.’
As far as Graeme’s concerned, things are as fab as ever. But where is dance music and club culture headed? Well, who better to ask directions than the man who wrote the disco A-Z? ‘I started doing it purely by accident,’ he details. ‘And then realised I was actually pretty good at it. But I never thought I’d end up doing it for over 25 years. And I see no need to stop at the moment. I still love playing fantastic tunes in a variety of different clubs all over the place and people still want me to do it too.’
And where we are now is a very interesting place to be with regular gigs around the UK, Europe and beyond playing a selection of classic house cuts as well as new and current tunes too. There’s also a variety of productions under various guises including the single ‘Shady’ by Gooden & Park with legendary Ten Cityvocalist Byron Stingily on vocals and his ongoing Yellow & Black project which includes original tracks, remixes and collaborations.  Although keen not to be bracketed as purely a ‘classics’ DJ, Graeme regularly delves into the thousands upon thousands of tunes he has collected on vinyl over the years: “House music has made people channel their tastes, so I went back to my roots and pulled out some forgotten classics,” he grins, still in love with process of mining those rich seams of vinyl. “I love seeing a crowd go wild to a tune they haven’t heard for years or playing something really obscure from 20 years ago that people think is new.”
Celebrating over 15 years on the radio with shows on Kiss, Galaxy, Key 103, Radio City, Juice FM, Forth One and more, Graeme’s years of experience help him understand the specialist skills required by a radio DJ: ‘A lot of radio shows or DJs just play the same big tunes. You can’t simply pretend you’re in a club, you have to talk to the audience and put your personality and knowledge across without sounding like an idiot.’ His weekly Graeme Park Radio Show airs on scores of radio stations both in the UK and overseas and brings in a big audience with his mix of new and older tunes mixed together like only he knows how.

DJ SY SETS

Sy started djing professionally in 1989 playing hip-hop, soul and house. He gained a residency at a nightclub called Venus in Nottingham in 1990 whilst still at university. The night became legendary, and because of this he was booked at events all over the Midlands, such as Nemesis in Leicester, Amnesia in Coventry, Time in Birmingham and at The Eclipse (the ravers’ mecca!)

Having gained a name as a Dj with a style of mixing that was unique to the newly born rave scene, other promoters such as Dreamscape, Helter Skelter, Obsession, Fantasia, Interdance and Perception included Sy on their line-ups. Club work all over the country and abroad followed and helped to establish his reputation as the “Scratchmaster”.

Sy’s individual mixing ability has maintained his popularity with ravers young and old and his infamous Old Skool sets are still in high demand. He is still one of the hardest working and in demand DJ’s on the circuit and can be found playing all over the country every weekend - his constant high quality upfront sets helped him gain the title of Hardcore Heaven’s “Hardcore Dj Of The Year” for the past 2 years in succession! Sy appears at virtually every major UK Hardcore gig, including Slammin Vinyl, Hardcore Heaven, HTID, Uproar, Dizstruxshon, Uprising, and Tasty, and more often than not graces the decks for his infamous “Power Hour” last set with MC Storm.

The hardcore scene has benefited recently from a surge in interest, with the quality and content of the music vastly improved from the lull in the late ‘90s. Together with his long-time producing partner, DJ Unknown, Sy has helped this newly found faith in hardcore, and their co-owned record label, Quosh Records, now boasts an impressive discography of over 90 releases.

The latest outlet for the boys’ talents has been Hardcore Heaven 3, released by Resist, available now from HMV & all good music retailers, featuring several recent & forthcoming Quosh Records releases. They also have a good few of their tracks featured on the latest & hugely successful Clubland X-Treme Hardcore 2 compilation,

BOWLERS DJ SETS

Back in April 1992, shortly after Pleasurdrome has closed down, we needed a new venue to move the night to. We hunted around for a couple of months and finally decided on this massive leisure centre in the middle of Trafford Park, Manchester.

The Very 1st Bowlers Flyer : 17 KThis massive 60,000 SQ FT venue seemed like the perfect choice to take our 3000+ crowd (that was the Pleasuredrome) to. With a guest appearance from Carl Cox, alongside myself (DJ Welly) and Kenny Grogan, plus the quite unique MC Bibi, the night was an instant success, 4000+ clubbers continued to carry on the spirit of the Pleasuredrome. (And that is how Bowlers began.!)"   DJ WELLY

ALLISTAIR WHITEHEAD DJ SETS

Allister Whitehead’ DJing career started way back in 1987 at the tender age of 17, where he played all over his hometown of Nottingham. He eventually took up a residency at Nottingham’ Koolkat, where he could often be seen playing next to the ubiquitous Graeme Park on Saturday nights. It was during this period that his reputation began to spread. He moved on to become resident at the seminal Nottingham club Venus (also one of Sasha’ career making clubs). His big break came when Mike Pickering of M People asked Allister to cover his DJing slot at the Hacienda as he was on tour with the group. On the strength of this Allister was offered a residency. He achieved cult status at Golden, which was voted club of the year in 1993. This set the stage for a residency at Cream, where Allister found his largest following yet. At the same time his nationwide status was achieved at Ministry of Sound, Gatecrasher and just about every club in between. Having proved his worth as a premier league DJ Allister felt that it was time to set up his own club – Zero G in Nottingham. This regularly saw crowds of 1500+ as the only place you could see Allister DJ on a Saturday night and also saw Allister’ demand to play at other clubs go through the roof.
He was truly established as a household name worldwide with the Gold selling Fantazia Album ‘The House Collection Volume 3’ which was the biggest selling DJing compilation ever seen at the time. This opened up the floodgates to a new era where the dance music industry is dominated by Compilation sales. Since then, he has achieved 3 more Gold and 2 more silver albums with further compilations for Fantazia and Ministry of Sound.
